PAN Card Fraud Alert: Scammers Targeting India Post Payments Bank Customers

A new phishing scam is targeting India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) customers, threatening the security of their personal and financial information. Scammers are sending fraudulent messages claiming that bank accounts will be blocked within 24 hours unless customers update their PAN card details. These messages include dubious links designed to steal sensitive information.

How the Scam Works ?

The scam messages instruct recipients to click on links that lead to fake websites mimicking official platforms. Unsuspecting users are tricked into entering their bank details, PAN information, and other sensitive data, potentially leading to financial fraud or identity theft.

PIB Debunks the Fraudulent Claims

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a warning on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that these messages are entirely fraudulent. In its statement, PIB clarified, “The claim that IPPB accounts will be blocked within 24 hours if PAN details are not updated is false. India Post does not send such messages.”

India Post has also emphasized that it does not request personal or financial details via messages or emails.

How to Stay Safe from PAN Card Scams

To protect yourself from falling victim to such scams:

  1. Avoid Clicking on Links: Never click on suspicious links sent via SMS, email, or messaging apps.
  2. Verify Communications: Cross-check any communication with the official India Post website or customer care.
  3. Do Not Share Sensitive Information: Avoid sharing bank account details, OTPs, or PAN card information unless you are on a verified platform.
  4. Enable Account Alerts: Use official banking apps or services to receive genuine notifications.
  5. Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect fraudulent activity, immediately report it to your bank and the cybercrime portal (https://cybercrime.gov.in).

The scam targeting IPPB customers is a reminder of the growing sophistication of phishing attempts. Staying vigilant and following official guidelines is crucial to safeguarding personal and financial information. If you receive such messages, ignore them and report them to the appropriate authorities to help combat digital fraud.
