Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92

Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s two-time Prime Minister and the architect of the country’s economic reforms, passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi confirmed his demise, citing age-related medical conditions.

AIIMS Statement


In an official statement, AIIMS said, "With profound grief, we inform the demise of former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had a sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26 December 2024. Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the medical emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi, at 8.06 pm. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9.51 pm."

Legacy of Dr. Manmohan Singh


Dr. Singh served as the Prime Minister of India for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Renowned as the architect of India’s liberalization policies in 1991, his tenure as Finance Minister under then-Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao marked a pivotal moment in India's economic history, setting the foundation for rapid growth and globalization.

As Prime Minister, Dr. Singh played a key role in initiatives like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Indo-US nuclear deal. Known for his intellect, humility, and dedication, he was a leader who garnered respect across political lines.

Declining Health in Recent Years


Dr. Singh had been in poor health over the past few months, receiving treatment for multiple age-related ailments. Despite his health challenges, he remained a revered figure in Indian politics and academia.
