After nearly 70 years of governance, the Congress party faces criticism for not effectively addressing poverty and education in India. Critics argue that the party's prolonged tenure left the country's poor and education systems largely unchanged. Meanwhile, Congress has been pressuring the current BJP government, in power for just 10 years, to perform a “miracle” by eradicating poverty and transforming other core systems. Some argue that it's unrealistic to expect BJP to fix in a decade what Congress could not achieve in seven.
The 1962 India-China War and Territorial Losses
During Congress's rule, India encountered a significant setback with the 1962 war with China, in which around 1,300 Indian soldiers sacrificed their lives, and 38,000 square kilometers of Indian land fell under Chinese control. At the time, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru led the Congress government. Critics argue that India's soldiers were not equipped with modern weaponry, a lapse attributed to the government of that period. To this day, questions remain on why Congress did not undertake concrete measures to reclaim Indian territory from China.
Jammu and Kashmir: Struggles with Terrorism
In 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession, making Jammu and Kashmir part of India. However, the region was soon affected by Pakistan-backed militancy. Critics argue that under Congress's extended rule, terrorism in Kashmir intensified, and local citizens continued to suffer the consequences. Congress's lack of decisive action against insurgents is viewed as a factor that allowed the issue to escalate.
In contrast, the BJP government claims that it has successfully reduced terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, bringing stability to the region. They argue that with security efforts, Jammu and Kashmir now enjoy a new era of peace and development, free from the prior influence of terrorism.
